Queen of the Night, May 4, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday

ABC Wednesday
Q is for Queen of the Night
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, July 23, 2015
One of the names for the Night-Blooming Cactus is Queen of the Night. The blooms open at night and close with the dawn. Each bloom is open for only one night. They are pollinated by night-flying insects.

Wild Bird Wednesday
Great Blue Heron
Great Blue Heron, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA
We often see Great Blue Herons wading in the shallow water at the river's edge at Pickwick. But last Monday was the first time we have ever seen one swimming along out in the middle of the river.

Great Blue Heron, Tennessee River at Pickwick, May 2, 2016
After a few minutes he flapped his wings and flew away.

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

  4. I honestly hafta say I don't think I've ever seen a GB Heron swimming!!! Usually they're standing like the flamingo yard art or flying. This is a special treat.

And the night cactus...I have two...the fragrance is so nice. Beautiful image of the blossom

  6. That's quite a cactus. My hubby has a very unusual one that did nothing for a year, but is suddenly sprouting all kinds of new branches on it. Hmmmm.
